Rivercell raises $25M to build data platforms and AI models that predict how human cells respond to treatments

Rivercell, the biotechnology and AI company building data infrastructure and AI models to predict how human cells respond to treatments, has raised $25 million in Seed funding.

The round was led by HV, together with Alven, HCVC, and Bpifrance.

Building an AI world model of the cell

Founded by Yann Fleureau and Eric Durand, Rivercell is developing a new approach to drug discovery based on understanding and predicting how human cells respond to drugs and genetic changes.

At the core of the company is a proprietary platform designed to generate large-scale, high-quality biological datasets. These datasets are used to train Rivercell’s AI Virtual Cell: a world model of the cell capable of predicting cellular responses in silico.

By making it possible to simulate part of what currently requires physical laboratory experiments, Rivercell aims to accelerate and reshape the drug discovery process.

Solving the data challenge in biological AI

Recent advances in AI have demonstrated the potential of foundation models in biology, but building predictive models of entire cells requires a type and scale of data that does not yet exist.

Rivercell is building this data foundation itself. Its platform generates multimodal, time-resolved data capturing how cells change under different treatments and perturbations, creating the training substrate needed for its AI models.

The approach is designed to be indication-agnostic, with potential applications across areas including oncology, immunology, rare diseases and cardiometabolic diseases.

“A world model of the cell is the opportunity of the century in medicine. The missing piece is data: how cells change over time and under treatment, seen through multiple lenses and at multiple layers, captured at scale. Building that data engine in Europe is strategic, not only for Rivercell but for the continent's place in AI and biology,” said Yann Fleureau, co-founder and CEO of Rivercell.

A team combining AI, biotech and entrepreneurship

Rivercell brings together Yann Fleureau, who previously co-founded and led AI diagnostics company Cardiologs through its acquisition by Philips, and Eric Durand, who previously led oncology data science at Novartis and served as Chief Data Science Officer at Owkin.

With this Seed round, Rivercell will scale both the data infrastructure and AI capabilities required to pursue its ambition: building predictive models of cellular behavior that could ultimately make drug discovery faster and more efficient.
